Freshwater algal blooms and their control: comparison of the European and Australian experience

Article Abstract:

Australia and Europe are losing recreational opportunities, spending for the development of alternative water supply, and experiencing health problems with their livestock and pets because of water quality degradation caused by excessive algal growth. This is found to be promoted by the presence of nutrients, phosphorus and nitrogen in their freshwaters which are exhausted by sewage plants, livestock industries, and detergents in Europe and non-point sources of agriculture in Australia. To control the problem, the two countries are upgrading and refining their sewage plants to remove phosphorus in their wastewater.

Oil spill response in freshwater: assessment of the impact of cleanup as a management tool

Article Abstract:

An assessment of the follow-up measures taken after cleanup-operations of oil spillage in freshwater environments shows that follow up or an environment assessment of the cleanup measures is rarely done. Even in cases of follow up being taken, it has been done to assess effectiveness of the oil removal and not to determine any negative environmental impact the cleanup itself might have had. Spill response in the freshwater environment is largely guided by specialization gained from marine spill operations.
