11 commandments of merge-purge

Article Abstract:

Merge-purge data processing commands were originally developed to help eliminate duplicate listings from mailing lists, but today these techniques can be used to enhance the profitability of mailing lists. Some such techniques are discussed. For example, combining merge-purge techniques with demographic analyses or with response analyses can lead to the development of a mailing list with higher response rates, and lists targeted at specific market segments. Eleven suggestions for selecting the proper merge-purge technique to fit the mailing list's requirements are also discussed; emphasized among these are: choosing a system that is flexible, selecting a cost-beneficial merge-purge system, ensuring that merge-purge reports are easily understood, and knowing the capabilities of the system (whether it can clean files, enhance files, or perform data analysis).
