Handmade house

Article Abstract:

Geoffrey Carter is ingeniously building the house with its Doric order columns. He makes good use of his construction background and the knowledge gained from his job as director of preservation for Historic Hudson Valley. The building problems he has solved and his philosophy are discussed.

A (fat-free) chip on my shoulder

Article Abstract:

A woman describes her disappointment with fat-free potato chips made with the fat substitute olestra. One serving contains 70 calories, as opposed to 150 calories for regular potato chips, but the fat-free chips have no taste unless they are dipped in French onion dip.

Bear freedom

Article Abstract:

Three bears used by gypsies to dance for tourists in Greece were rescued by the World Society for the Protection of Animals. The maltreated bears were taken to a bear sanctuary in the forested mountains of northern Macedonia.
