How to build a better rice dryer

Article Abstract:

The Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand has come up with a simple, solar-powered rice dryer made largely of bamboo poles and plastic sheeting. Thedryer prevents second crops from spoilage during the rainy season and isaffordable particularly for poor rice farmers from South and Southeast Asia. It costs around US$150 to construct a one-ton capacity dryer, and much less if the farmers do not have to spend for the bamboo poles.

Computerized phytotron speeds rice breeding

Article Abstract:

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea will use a computerized phytotron to increase the yield of rice crops. The phytotron features six 30-square chambers separately controlled for regulating temperature. It also monitors humidity from 60 to 90 percent. Computer programs govern changes in the chambers. Rice productivity in North Korea is expected to be 10% higher profiting as much as $50 million.
