Interdisciplinary research on the management of aquatic ecosystems

Article Abstract:

Interdisciplinary research on the management of aquatic ecosystems is discussed with information about studies of the Delaware Estuary and the Baltic Sea. In both studies there was an effort to find economically efficient management strategies, and in all such studies it is not adequate to give information to the public about possible decreases in pollutant emission rates when easily understandable benefits of emission reduction cannot be shown.

The MARE research program 1999-2006: Reflections on program management

Article Abstract:

The Marine Research on Eutrophication (MARE) research program that went on from the year 1999 to 2006 was a Scientific Base for the Cost-Effective Measures for the Baltic Sea. The program despite several shortcomings has proved to be a great success in providing us information about the harmful effects of treatments and eutrophication on the Baltic Sea ecosystem.

Giving advice on cost effective measures for a cleaner Baltic Sea: a challenge for science

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented on MARE, a program financed by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research, which will address environmental problems in the Baltic Sea. MARE's goals include mitigating the negative impacts of eutrophication and recreating a sustainable marine ecology.
