Recovery from eutrophication: experiences of reduced phosphorus input to the four largest lakes of Sweden

Article Abstract:

Different eutrophication recovery rates are explained for the Swedish lakes Malaren, Hjalmaren, Vanern, and Vattern. For the latter two, slow water renewal has led to only minor phosphorus reductions since the mid-1960s. Hjalmaren's recovery has been slowed by sediment phosphorus release. Malaren's recovery has been assisted by high flows and unidirectional water transports.

Phosphorus in tributaries to Lake Malaren, Sweden: analytical fractions, anthropogenic contribution and bioavailability

Article Abstract:

Phosphorus (P) concentration and transport is quantified for 12 major tributaries of the Swedish lake Malaren over a 15-month period. Dissolved reactive P comprised 13%, dissolved unreactive P 23%, and particulate P 64% as flow-weighted means for tributary P-content levels. Significant seasonal variability was also observed, due to anthropogenic impact.

Fish status survey of Nordic lakes: effects of acidification, eutrophication and stocking activity on present fish species composition

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that fish populations in the lakes of Norway, Sweden, and Finland have been affected primarily by stocking activity than by losses through environmental change. Implications for fishery management are discussed.
