Phytoplankton and water quality characterization: experiences from the Swedish large lakes Malaren, Hjalmaren, Vattern and Vanern

Article Abstract:

A reduction in phosphorus loading of Sweden's four largest lakes, which occurred during the 1970s, has had a significant impact on phytoplankton communities. Reactions were rapid, and included cyanobacteria reduction, decreases in cryptophycean flagellates and spring diatoms, increases in taxon richness, a change in species size, and a contracted water-bloom period.

The environmental consequences of alien species in the Swedish lakes Malaren, Hjalmaren, Vanern and Vattern

Article Abstract:

The article examines the effects of accidental and intentional introduction of alien species into Sweden's four largest lakes. These include parasites and pathogens transported in ballast water and the stocking of fish for recreation, both of which have contributed to the extinction of native flora and fauna within these lakes.

Four decades of research on the Swedish large lakes Malaren, Hjalmaren, Vattern and Vanern: the significance of monitoring and remedial measures for a sustainable society

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented on environmental monitoring practices launched in the 1960s to assess the status of four large lakes in southern Sweden. Monitoring shows that the upgrade of municipal sewage works in lake catchments, which reduced discharges by up to 95%, has dramatically improved water quality.
