Louisiana estuarine and coastal fisheries and habitats: perspectives from a fish's eye view

Article Abstract:

An assessment is made of management strategies to mitigate negative impacts of industrial activities on coastal and estuarine habitats in Louisiana. Problems addressed include saltwater intrusion, increased areas of hypoxia, and loss of coastal wetlands due to the effects of fishing, oil exploration, development and flood control.

Degraded sediment quality in U.S. estuaries: a review of magnitude and ecological implications

Article Abstract:

An analysis is presented on the relationships between spatial extent of toxicity, incidence of chemical pollution and the occurrence of degraded benthic communities in American estuaries. Findings indicate that numerical guidelines based on sediment quality can be used to predict toxicity, and identify degraded benthos.

Operationalizing sustainability: management and risk assessment of land-derived nitrogen loads to estuaries

Article Abstract:

Waquoit Bay, MA, is used to delineate coastal management strategies. Processes include the merging of stakeholder opinion and scientific research data to produce policy, comparing causal relationships to end point measures, and incorporating economic, cultural and political inputs.
