Low-tech rehabilitation of degraded coral reefs through transplantation of staghorn corals

Article Abstract:

Experiments on coral reef restoration off the coast of Tanzania, Africa, have shown transplanted staghorn corals can be effective. Although unconsolidated coral rubble is an inhospitable environment, tying corals together with string prior to placement increases repopulation rate. A study showed an increase of 51% within 23 months.

Can corals be harvested sustainably?

Article Abstract:

The article examines specific considerations for gauging sustainability of corals. These include temporal and spatial scales, target species ecology, management options such as no-take areas, and feasibility of coral culture. Species, catch, and compliance monitoring are key to promoting sustainability.

Marine reserves exploit population structure and life history in potentially improving fisheries yields

Article Abstract:

Proponents of marine reserves have suggested that reserves can provide a number of advantages over other, more traditional methods. The findings of the study show an explicit step forward in understanding how marine reserves operate and the condition under which they may have benefits.
