Modelling estuarine eutrophication in the context of hypoxia, nitrogen loadings, stratification and nutrient ratios

Article Abstract:

A multinomial logistic regression estuarine eutrophication model was developed and applied to 10 US Gulf of Mexico estuaries. The model determines the condition of estuaries as severely hypoxic, hypoxic, borderline hypoxic and normoxic depending on the 'phosphorus to nitrogen' load ratios, salinity stratifications and nitrogen loadings. The Apalachicola Bay is normoxic, with a 25% decline in nutrient loading. Similarly, Choctawhatchee Bay is shifting into the normoxic status with a 75% decline in nutrient loading.

Filter feeding and plankton dynamics in a Danish fjord: a review of the importance of flow, mixing and density-driven circulation

Article Abstract:

Information regarding the feeding demands and the effectiveness of filter feeders have been used to explain variations in plankton biomass. In a study involving hydrodynamic conditions in a Danish fjord, it was observed that phytoplankton biomass variations can be explained by the interaction between hydraulic processes and filter-feeding organisms. This phenomenon is of utmost importance in marine monitoring programs.

Integrated agri-environmental modelling: a cost-effectiveness analysis of two nitrogen tax instruments in the Vejle Fjord watershed, Denmark

Article Abstract:

An analytic framework is presented in which the effects of agriculture on the economy and on nitrogen loadings can be modelled. The framework includes a partial equilibrium sector model for Danish agriculture.
