Negative indirect effects of an avian insectivore on the fruit set of an insect-pollinated herb

Article Abstract:

An observational study is conducted along the Middle Rio Grande in New Mexico to determine if avian aerial insectivores had a negative, indirect impact on insect-pollinated plants through predation of insect pollinators. Considerable taxonomic overlap was found at the order and family level, between insects visiting sweet clover and those eaten by cliff swallows.

Can seeds predict their future? Germination strategies of density-regulated desert annuals

Article Abstract:

The results of four desert annual species are presented, suggesting that germination rates are variable even in the absence of abiotic cues. The findings suggest an intriguingly simple and effective mechanism that may allow annual plants to partly predict their future success.
