No-take marine reserves and reef fisheries management in the Philippines: A new people power revolution

Article Abstract:

The Sumilon and Apo islands in the Philippines are a testimony to the significant contribution that local community managed no-take reserves made to biodiversity conservation and fisheries management. The successful marine-conservation and reef fisheries-management program of the Philippines, which is the evidence of the 'people power revolutionE, were originated from these islands.

Indigenous use and trade of dugong (Dugong dugon) in Sabah, Malaysia

Article Abstract:

A state of dugong deaths in the waters near Johors in Malaysia determined that the dugong was not as near to extinction as was supposed and led to renewed interest in conducting research on them. A report providing information on the traditional uses and anthropogenic threats to the remaining dugong populations in Sabah is presented.

Increasing conservation management action by involving local people in natural resource monitoring

Article Abstract:

A study comparing participatory methods of biodiversity monitoring with conventional scientific methods without the participation of local residents is presented. Findings reveal that participatory monitoring represents a cost-effective alternative and a much higher level of conservation management intervention.
