Russia's protected areas in transition: the impacts of Perestroika, economic reform and the move towards democracy

Article Abstract:

The collapse of the centralized Soviet government, little popular support and a decline in financial resources to protected areas by 90% since 1989 has weakened the Russian Federation's parks and protected areas. Non government organizations (NGOs) and programs funded by private international donors and park rangers organizing their own initiative are working to protect the diminishing biodiversity of the environment.

Globalization and multi-spatial trends in the coverage of protected-area conservation (1980-2000)

Article Abstract:

The multi-scale patterning of four of the basic facets of the global expansion of protected-area coverage that occurred during 1980-2000 period is discussed. The interaction of the different factors led to the creation and reinforcement of marked spatial differences in the course of protected-area expansion during the 1980-2000 period.

Integrating protected area management with local needs and aspirations

Article Abstract:

The attempts made by Integrated Conservation and Development Projects (ICDPS) since the 1980s to reconcile park management with local needs and aspirations are discussed. The lessons from the ICDPS experience provide an important opportunity to inform the next generation of biodiversity conservation programs.
