Scale and sustainability of marine bioprospecting for pharmaceuticals

Article Abstract:

The collection of marine organisms which is very small in amounts for discovery and development of pharmaceuticals may lead to threatening the environment and maintaining of rare organisms or those having restricted distribution or is targeted in a small area. The industry avoids organisms with small population, uses alternative methods like synthesis and culture, while the collection protocols and environmental impact assessment helps in maintaining a check on the number of organisms where organisms need to be used and hence marine bioprospecting for pharmaceuticals have a minimum influence on the environment.

Forest fires and sustainability in the boreal forests of Canada

Article Abstract:

Research of forest fires in Canada show that their incidence may be increasing. Studies based on statistics obtained from Canada's boreal forests, extreme fire years are becoming more common, with just 2% to 3% of incidents generating around 98% of total area burned per year. These findings may require reconsideration of intentional burning as a forest management technique.
