There is no such thing as a fascist tree

Article Abstract:

Eucalypt trees have gained a reputation for giving profits to landholders and industrialists while being detrimental to the environment and the subsistence of small landowners. It is a harsh allegation, however, because the eucalypt is easy to grow, can be harvested every 4 to 8 years and yields a variety of products. Its many disadvantages, like inability to improve the soil and the tendency to attract pests, may be counteracted if there is better tree planning and management.

A wild vine beats the Mexican bean weevil

Article Abstract:

Scientists from the International Center for Tropical Agriculturein Cali, Colombia, have made a breakthrough in breeding genetic resistance to the bean weevil into beans. They have found that the Mexican wild bean collected by Dr. H. S. Gentry in 1970 contains a novel protein called arcelin which impedes the weevil's digestion. The arcelin gene has been successfully bred and tested in Africa and Latin America. The discovery has brought huge savings to small farmers worldwide.

Variability in diapause duration in the chestnut weevil: mixed ESS, genetic polymorphism or bet-hedging?

Article Abstract:

The variability in diapause duration in the chestnut weevil is examined as bet-hedging, mixed Evolutionary Stable Strategy (ESS) and genetic polymorphism of pure strategies. The comparisons of adult performance for the two life-cycle morphs (short or long cycle) are discussed.
