Trophic cascades: a role for parasites?

Article Abstract:

Research is presented indicating that parasites may impact trophic cascades by influencing predator avoidance behavior in rodents. Studies showed that rodents infected with parasites which use predators as final hosts were more active and less cautious than uninfected rodents, suggesting that parasites may have an affect on rodent brain function.

The influence of a parasite community on the dynamics of a host population: A longitudinal study on willow ptarmigan and their parasites

Article Abstract:

The hypothesis that host population dynamics are affected both by single parasite species and by the whole parasite community is explored. The population density and breeding productivity of two populations of willow ptarmigan were monitored in northern Norway for 8 and 11 years respectively and samples eukaryotic endoparasites.

Taking trophic cascades up a level: behaviorally-modified effects of phorid flies on ants and ant prey in coffee agroecosystems

Article Abstract:

The interactions between the parasitic phorid fly, Pseudacteon, its ant host, Azteca instabilis, and the herbivore, Spodoptera frugiperda in the coffee ecosystem are analyzed. It is concluded that there is existence of a behaviorally-modified species-level trophic cascade in the coffee agroecosystem.
