Changing one's heart

Article Abstract:

Forgiveness is often thought of as something that must be deserved, but genuine forgiveness involves a change of heart in spite of the culpability of the wrongdoer and one's entitlement to resentment. This forgiveness is not equivalent to condoning wrongdoing. As illustrated by characters in Margaret Atwood's novel 'Life Before Man,' true forgiveness means understanding wrong actions as making biographical sense if not moral sense, for example as a response to ill treatment in the past. Forgiveness is not approval, but does involve respecting the person instead of insisting on enforcing moral demands.

A 61-year-old man with psoriasis

Article Abstract:

Psoriasis may be very difficult for primary care physicians to treat. It is a chronic skin disorder characterized by patchy red, itchy lesions that have a silvery scale. It appears to be a disorder of keratinocyte maturation and resembles wound healing. The lesions also contain activated T cells. Those with severe psoriasis may have fever and malaise. Triggers include drugs, cigarette smoke, alcohol and stress. Mild psoriasis can be treated with topical corticosteroids and ultraviolet B light. More severe disease may respond to methotrexate, retinoids, cyclosporine, or vitamin D compounds.

A note on permits, standards, and technological innovation

Article Abstract:

Two issues raised by Montero are clarified. First, Montero's approach is used to show that in fact performance standards will generate greater incentives to innovate than market-based instruments in perfectly competitive markets. Second, Montero abstracts from production costs and concentrates solely on abatement costs.
