Analyzing results on lawns and farm crops

Article Abstract:

A horticulturist and researcher at the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, who also serves as the Sustainable Agricultural Coordinator, has an unofficial work of convincing people to turn to composting to improve their crops. She conducted a research project in Florida to determine if composts can be used as substitutes for all types of synthetic fertilizers. Another research at the Texas A and M compared the use of composted or fresh manure on crops. Results showed a higher yield for broccoli and cantaloupe.

Soil bioremediation research at EPA

Article Abstract:

The EPA's National Risk Management Research Laboratory is conducting studies to develop large-scale soil bioremediation technologies. The laboratory is focusing on two major bioremediation strategies, namely, slurry bioreactor treatment and composting. The main challenge to the development of such systems for large-scale use is the need to culture large volumes of microorganisms. A discussion of some of the current research on culturing these microorganisms in large containers is presented.

NASA tests composters for space

Article Abstract:

Scientists at the Kennedy Space Center are studying regenerative life support systems and resource recovery through waste processing and recycling. Composters have several advantages over continuously stirred tank reactors. Operation of composters requires less time and manpower, especially since crop residues can be processed fresh. Mass and volume are also lower since less water is used in composting than in continuously stirred tank reactors.
