Keeping organics out of landfills

Article Abstract:

The UK will face significant challenges as it seeks to implement the European Union Landfill Directive, under which the proportion of biodegradable material reaching landfill sites will have to be reduced. The UK generates around 28 million metric tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) a year, with around 30% of this being biodegradable. At present, only around 8% of MSW is incinerated, with a further 8% being recycled. The rest is landfilled. Operators of landfill sites will have to draw up plans by 2002 to show how they will comply with the Directive.

Small-scale fish composting trials

Article Abstract:

The booming recreational fishing industry in Minnesota has created an environmental problem in the form of fish wastes. The estimated 4,000 fishing resorts produce about 15 million pounds of fish wastes annually, and find it costly to have them hauled to landfills. In response to the problem, the Minnesota Sea Grant Extension Program Service conducted pilot composting operations in five resorts in 1990. Techniques and recommendations for fish waste composting are given.
