As neighbors close in, composter gets enclosed

Article Abstract:

Pierce County, WA-based Land Recovery Inc (LRI) successfully used in-vessel composting units to compost excess yard trimmings which cannot be accommodated at the company's compost facilities. Fifteen 50 cubic yard in-vessel compost bins, with a maximum capacity of 27 tons, were installed at the company's Hidden Valley Landfill transfer site. The bins were run using a programmable logic control computer that monitors the operation of each unit. In addition to compost bins, the company's Organics Recycling Center was built with sound barrier walls to avoid causing inconvenience to neighbors.
