Aerobic composting toilets for tropical environments

Article Abstract:

Aerobic batch composting toilet is the best sanitation option for tropical developing countries. It is the most simple and economic way to prevent pollution and to convert excreta into a product of value. The double vault composting (DVC) toilets are the most common toilets. DVC toilets function under anaerobic conditions that are ideal for pathogen survival. The use of waterless toilets and zero discharge technologies is also being promoted. These toilets can attain a high degree of liquid evaporation and maintenance free operation.

Composting latrines in Honduras

Article Abstract:

Thermophilic, aerobic composting latrines have started functioning in Tocomacho, a small fishing and farming village in Honduras. They are economical, simple to build and maintain, and convenient to use. The total cost of one such latrine is about $20, including the cost of construction materials such as wood, posts and thatching material used for the compost bin, and plastic bucket and wooden seat. These latrines ensure the safe maintenance of groundwater and also keep away flies and pathogens.

Compost toilets reconsidered

Article Abstract:

There are two categories of commercially available compost toilets: self-contained units and centralized systems. A growing number of cottages, off-the-grid homes and public facilities are realizing the advantages of compost toilets and installing them. Despite the improved performance of today's compost toilets, some people are still reluctant to use them because they require extensive maintenance. Moreover, town and state permits are usually required before installing compost toilets.
