Biosolids composting holds its own

Article Abstract:

A study of biosolids composting activity in 1997 was conducted. The results showed that projects relating to biosolids composting, totaled 332, six projects less than those in 1996. This was attributed to fewer projects under development, only 70 compared to 88 the previous year, whereas operating projects steadily increased to 262 from 250. New York heads all other states in terms of the most number of projects, with 35, second of which is California with 22. Meanwhile, the decrease in nonoperating projects is caused principally by increased use of landfilling.

Of a total of 214 food waste composting initiatives in the US, nearly 50% are located on-site at institutions, including correctional facilities; and over 30% are commercial ventures. Some 176 facilities are currently in operation, with 22 in pilot stage and a further 16 in construction, planning or permission pending stages. A breakdown of composters by location is given, including details of status, technology, volume and feedstock.
