Breaking down biodegradable bags

Article Abstract:

A study to determine the biodegradability of compostable bags within the normal composting process was undertaken. The findings showed that Envar, EcoPLA, Biocorp, MaterBi reSource and MaterBi Linden Group bags were completely decomposed whereas Bio-Solo, Plastigone and Degra-Novon bags were uncomposted. The tensile strength of the bags were also tested by filling each type with yard trimmings and was set on the curbside for two weeks. Among the bags which were fully decomposed, EcoPLA was the only bag which did not break.

About 20% of its compost is used for erosion control, another 20% is bought by horticulturists and gardeners and the rest is sold to farmers. The firm operates in southwest Idaho where it processes the manure of six dairy farms. Its farm-grade compost is priced at $9 per cubic yard. Including hauling, stockpiling and spreading, farmers pay about $60 per acre on compost.
