Calculating food residuals generation quantities

Article Abstract:

A method to estimate food waste production levels is presented, using seven food-related industry sectors in Oregon's Portland metropolitan area. These include restaurants, food stores, hospitals, universities, hotels, manufacturing, and wholesale trade. Computation factors include number of employees and yards of waste generated per week.

Airport economies on food residuals collections costs

Article Abstract:

The Portland International Airport (PDX) in Oregon has formed a collection partnership with two hotels and flight kitchens to lower rising costs for its food residuals diversion program at the airport. The success of the project is attributed to the strong commitment to communication between hauler and participating businesses.

Portland test strategies to divert commercial organics

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the environmental benefits which are the result of Portland City Council's 1996 policy requiring business enterprises to recycle half of their waste. The waste management of food residuals is discussed.
