C&D recycling at Maine transfer station

Article Abstract:

The Public Works Dept of the city of Portland, ME, is able to have its C&D debris handled free of charge at L.R. Higgins Co's recycling centre and transfer station. The company has contracts to accept leaves from a number of municipalities and with commercial haulers. More than half of the incoming materials are recycled or composted, with the rest being disposed of in landfills. Scrap dealers purchase metals, which account for 10% of all materials, with cardboard being sold loose. The plant's first batch of compost will be sold from spring 1998.
