Commercial organics take different route in San Jose

Article Abstract:

Two methods of composting, one at Allied Waste/BFI in San Jose and the other at Z-Best in Gilroy are described. Allied/BFI requires customers to put compostables into clear plastic nonbiodegradable bags so the contents are visible and a trammel with mounted knives is used to open bags and empty the contents and at Z-Best food-rich loads are placed in composting bags for eight to 12 weeks, then removed from bag and screened prior to utilization.
