Community composting in developing countries

Article Abstract:

Community-managed composting in Jakarta, Indonesia is slowly gaining ground with the establishment of community composting projects in areas such as Cipinang Besar and Watam. Composting sites in developing countries are dependent on the communities' commitment to get the garbage off the streets. The steps taken to support the projects include the World Bank's promotion of the use of compost products in 1997 and the training of local women's groups in separating recyclables, household worm and bin composting and in promoting recycling in their communities.

Bacteriology of composting

Article Abstract:

Success in composting requires that microbial synergistic interactions and optimal conditions occur. Macro-, intermediate and micronutrients in a constant ratio determine the composting feasibility and practicality for a given waste. The molecular and cellular structure, on the other hand, determine microbial waste assimilation capacity. The maintenance of these optimal conditions results in a compost product that is not only desirable but cost-effective as well.
