Comparison between in-vessel and turned pile composting systems

Article Abstract:

The article examines techniques used in Spain's Catalonia region for composting municipal solid waste. Of the two primary systems, the in-vessel or tunnel method provided more effective leachates production management, odor control and vector control than the mechanically turned pile method.

Composting in the Catalonia wine industry

Article Abstract:

The Catalonia wine industry has invested in wastewater treatment as well as in water savings and wine byproducts and sludge valorization to evaluate all the environmental impacts associated with the production process. Composting is technically and economically viable for most wine industry companies to convert residuals to an organic amendment and avoid risk of pathogen infections.

Backyard composting in Catalonia

Article Abstract:

An extensive pilot program in Catalonia, Spain has shown that backyard composting can play an essential role in sustainable waste management strategies for recycling the organic fraction of MSW. Local municipalities provide composter units to citizens and communities in an attempt to divert large quantities of organic wastes from local collection systems, adopting the programs developed in other countries, such as in the U.S.
