Compost pays off in the orchard

Article Abstract:

Ron Stewart has been making and using compost for the apple, pear and cherry trees in his 150-acre Hood River, OR, orchard since 1993. Stewart, who has owned the orchard since 1975, decided to switch from chemical to organic farming in 1990, when the Alar apple spray scare sent the price of apples crashing down from $18 a bushel to $3 a bushel. Trying his hand at composting in 1990, Stewart was initially not successful. It was not until 1993 when he began composting on a three-acre site adjacent to his orchard that he, and his neighbors as well, found out the benefits of composting.
