Composted biosolids are big plus to Ohio nursery

Article Abstract:

Klyn Nurseries in Perry, OH, started to use compost on its beddings and container plants back in 1988 when its president, Bill Hendricks, became acquainted with the idea through compost researcher Harry Hoitink of The Ohio State University. Hendricks uses compost that are made of a mixture of large and small particles to provide adequate aeration for the plants. The compost has helped accelerate the plants' growth, as well as increase their resistance to diseases. The nursery has also been designated by the state as collection site for residents' leaves refuse during autumn.

Manure composting project at University of Wisconsin

Article Abstract:

The Agricultural Research Station at the University of Wisconsin has started manure composting project that utilizes wastes from research facilities. Animal manures, bedded with agricultural wastes, are stockpiled and spread on farm production fields. The waste materials are windrowed, turned and land spread. Windrowing and turning reduces the odor problems. The final product is marketed or used in lieu of topsoil on the University grounds. The project helps in reducing problems due to urbanization and rising soil phosphorous levels.
