Composter finds liquid supply

Article Abstract:

A juice bottling company in Wichita Falls, Texas, dumps its excess liquids and containers at an organics recycling facility and this has benefited both companies. The bottler cannot dump liquids into landfills and treatment plants do not want organic materials, therefore disposal was a problem. The recycling facility crushes the bottles and then sprays the liquid onto rows of compost. The composting company needed more liquid to speed up the rate of composting and it has found that the juice is better than water because it increases the C:N ratio.

Turning a mining operation into compost production

Article Abstract:

Silver Creek Materials Inc. has diversified from being a sand and gravel mining operation into a solid waste industry. The market demand is more for composted soil mixes than compost. Inclusion of mining materials, such as topsoil and sand, in a compost mix provides an organically enhanced soil. Diatomaceous earth is also added to the mixes. The company's success has been through its market strategy of encouraging diversion of organic materials by charging a lower tipping fee than the two nearby landfills.
