Composting has promising future in Mexico City

Article Abstract:

The Mexico City government has launched a program in 1993 which would encourage the use of composting as a means of reducing the city's wastes and to lessen the amount of wastes sent to landfills. Since 1997, the city government has been promoting the use of compost at numerous occasions and is planning various composting programs. The city government initiated a composting project which utilized the windrow method with a small tub grinder and compost turner for its equipment. The compost produced by the project has gained public acceptance due to its good appearance and ability to enhance soil fertility.

Efficiency of backyard composting

Article Abstract:

Backyard composting as a supplement to centralized plant composting is increasingly being accepted in many parts of northern Italy. Many people in small rural areas, residential districts and municipalities surrounding large cities such as Bergamo, Milan and Padua are recycling organic materials on their own initiative. They have been helped and encouraged by town governments which are almost exclusively promoting backyard composting programs through funding for the equipment or by discounting the municipal refuse tax on interested families by 10%-30%.
