Composting prison food residuals

Article Abstract:

The Connecticut Department of Correction (DOC) has launched a food waste composting initiative, which aims to cut its total waste by 40% by the turn of the century. The initiative has been supported by a Department of Environmental Protection grant and 30 inmates are providing the manpower. Four prisons now provide food waste to the composting facility at Enfield Correctional Institution. Wood residuals are provided by a local company as a bulking agent. The finished product is used as a fertiliser on DOC grounds.

Composting food processing residuals

Article Abstract:

Canada has seen a rise in the number of compost plants in recent years as organic by-products available locally have led to the production of good feedstock supplies. The Hensall Compost Facility uses material such as bean and corn screenings and corrugated cardboards. Coastal areas rich in crab and fish offal, have used these materials along with wood shavings from sawmills to feed their compost plants and prepare soil fertilizers instead of struggling to haul mud exposed at low tide to search for shell fish.
