Composting wastewater biosolids

Article Abstract:

A sludge composting project, thePilot Composting Facility (PCF), was inaugurated on St. Patrick's Day, 1992 in Albuquergue, NM. PCF was designed to compost part of the daily 25 tons of wastewater biosolids at the Southside Water Reclamation Plant. The facility will study windrow autothermal performance of five waste bulking materials suchas bark mulch, horse stable waste, shredded and chipped tree and brush trimmings, grass clippings and paper mulch; and anaerobically digested sewage sludge.

Research is presented on a sustainable agricultural program using compost to sprout bell pepper seeds, which were then transplanted. Compost-amended media were found to significantly improve pepper plant growth.
