Compound costs of instrument inaccuracies

Article Abstract:

The selection, installation and maintenance of chlorine residual analyzers are critical to permitting requirements and the cost-effective operation of chlorination and dechlorination activities at wastewater treatment facilities. The cost of obtaining precise and reliable data on accurate and dependable chlorine residual analyzers is low when compared to the overall cost of facility operations on a year-to-year basis. This is demonstrated in the experience of a wastewater treatment facility that had a probe-type chlorine residual analyzer custom installed roughly 100 ft downstream from the chlorine injection point to monitor wastewater effluent.

Watershed reactions to forest practices studied

Article Abstract:

Researchers at the Energy Dept's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory have improved a computer watershed model that may assist forest managers in designing or modifying land use activities that would avoid altering the natural processes of watersheds. The model is based on geographic information systems technology. It is designed to establish the link between cause and effect and will enable forest experts to explore the environmental and economic trade-offs of a variety of land use activities.

Modular cover stops algae, eliminates chemical usage

Article Abstract:

Gould Pumps of Seneca falls, NY, used Lemna Technologies' LemTec Modular Cover System to eliminate algae clogging the cooling system for its water plants. Lemna custom-built the cover to accommodate the obstructions above the water surface of the pond. By completely covering the water surface using the modular cover system, Gould successfully stopped the growth of algae and eliminated the use of expensive chemical treatment.
