Degrading PCBs through composting

Article Abstract:

The Center for Microbial Ecology at Michigan State University is studying the use of composting to biodegrade polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The center is conducting its research on a PCB-contaminated site within a defunct packaging facility near Monroe, MI. Composting is favored as bioremediation method because it is more economical compared to landfilling and less expensive than incineration. The study indicates that PCBs in soils were reduced when composted with yard trimmings.
