Earthworms team up with yard trimmings in orchards

Article Abstract:

The California Integrated Waste Management Board demonstrated the advantages of organic material applications in agriculture by experimenting on two ranches in California. In one project, the number of L. terrestris doubled in number in areas where yard trimmings were applied as mulch compared to unmulched sites due to the insulating properties of mulch. In the other project, there was a significant increase in leaf litter disappearances from soil surfaces where inoculations of L. terrestris were made compared to sites where the worms were absent.

Vermiculture in Cuba

Article Abstract:

Cuba employs a large-scale vermiculture practice and has more than 170 centers producing earthworm castings for use as manure. Vermiculture has enabled Cuba to decrease its imports of fertilizers by 77% between 1989 and 1992. Organic wastes such as animal manure, sugar cane pulp, and garbage are used as feedstock. The rotational grazing system allows spread of manure over wide pastures but decreases availability of manure for vermiculture feedstock. The Pinar del Rio Province has the largest Cuban vermiculture production center.

Brewery and farm team up for composting

Article Abstract:

The Free State Brewing Company in Lawrence, Kansas installed a $21,000 Hobart pulper/extruder in 1996 as part of a move to reduce waste and generate compost. The company has reduced the volume of waste generated by 80% since implementation of the new device and also since it became involved in a city cardboard recycling initiative. The feedstock is composted in an old pit silo at John Pendleton's farm. In 1998 the company was awarded the Environmental Excellence Award.
