Environmentalism, democracy, and pollution control

Article Abstract:

A study on determining whether the number of environmental lobby groups, the democratic participation rate, and the degree of electoral competition have discernable impacts on environmental policy making is presented. A theory is proposed stating that the effect of democratic participation (electoral competition) is conditional on the level of competition (democratic participation). The results of the study are analyzed.

Introduction to the symposium on trade, renewable resources and biodiversity

Article Abstract:

The five papers comprising the symposium on trade, renewable resources and biodiversity are good illustrations of a growing literature in this area that show how the design of appropriate policies must take into account complex interactions between ecological, economic and intuitional factors. The policy options and recommendations also change considerably with the complexity of the trade and environmental issues.
