European collection programs for source separated organics

Article Abstract:

Studies conducted by the Organic Reclamation and Composting Association (ORCA) and Helmot Kaiser Consultancy recommend that bins containing household waste be collected on a weekly basis to prevent the accumulation of waste or the proliferation of noxious odors. Kaiser suggests that biowaste should be collected only in special bins to safeguard against infection. ORCA feels that a system of one bin collected weekly rather than two bins collected biweekly in source separation programs is necessary, especially in densely populated areas.

Collection options for mixed and source separated organics

Article Abstract:

The pros and cons of the debate between two and three bin solid waste collection and disposal are presented. The resulting main point of contention in the discussion are the costs involved. In order to obtain a more practical investigation, the issue was applied in the comparison of four Minnesota composting facilities. It was determined that the three bin collection approach does not automatically lead to more expenses.
