The key issues senior lenders take into account when considering whether to fund composting facilities include the reputation of the general contractor, the presence of strong front-end contracts, the availability of approvals and the owner's commitment and investment. The bank's engineer will wish to review the facility construction plans and budget, and the applicant must submit a business plan detailing corporate history, management profiles, business strategy and market conditions. The bank will require a construction bond and a performance bond as part of the loan package.

Start-up recycling firms have managed to raise funding for their operations through participation at investment forums. Companies such as United Recycling Inc of Minnesota and Imagex Technologies Inc of Massachusetts were able to gain an audience with their prospective investors when they presented their programs and expansion plans at Northeast Recycling Investment Forums. United Recycling gained private financing for hiring additional managers and purchasing equipment while Imagex got the support of Con Edison for the development of an innovative paper recycling equipment.
