Finding bulk markets for composted manure

Article Abstract:

The Brazos River Authority in Texas launched a project aimed at determining the viability of processing, exporting and selling of dairy manure from Erath County. The county generates one billion lbs/yr of dry lot manure from its 85,000 cows. Dairy farms do not have sewage treatment facilities and runoff from the manure during heavy rainfall may pollute ground water and cause the ruin of aquatic habitats. The Texas Institute for Applied Environmental Research and engineering firm Camp, Dresser and McKee were the main participants in the project. The project identified compost from dairy manure as the product which had the highest market demand.

Keeping manure in a closed loop

Article Abstract:

The future of small, family-owned dairy farms is uncertain due to the increasing costs of waste management. Currently, 'good waste management' means that dairy farms will have spread 6,000 gallons of manure to every acre. The process is an unpleasant, smelly task that can result in water quality degradation. It is suggested that the solution to the waste problems of dairy farms is through the adoption of pollution control technologies which will eliminate wastes while recovering useful materials.

Recovering costs of managing manure

Article Abstract:

An anaerobic digestion research project in Vermont is seeking ways to use methane in small dairy farms. The main advantage of anaerobic digestion is its potential to reduce the costs of nutrient and manure management, while the gaas can be used to produce electricity.
