Bio-Oregon, a company based in Warrenton, at the mouth of the Columbia River converted residuals form coastal seafood processing plant into feed for hatcheries and organic plant nutrients and had a total sales of 14 million pounds of products in 2003. The president and co-owner of the company stated that their goal was to provide a means of fertilization that will not pollute streams and rivers.

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection is integrating a density mapping tool with a geographic information system to monitor the state?s organics diversion status and potential. The process tracks such variables as food waste processors, their type and number, and their diversion status within municipal boundaries.
