Hospital finds winning waste reduction formula
Article Abstract:
The New York Hospital Queens realized almost $935,000 in savings and reduced its waste charges by 71% by implementing a waste management program that combined waste reduction, recycling and composting. The program aimed to conserve natural resources, reduce the hospital's impact on the resources of the Queens area and redirect funds from waste removal to patient care. To disseminate the importance of recycling to the entire hospital, a 'Green Team' was formed whose task is to reeducate the staff about waste reduction and conservation. Waste reduction began with medical waste, followed by clear bag waste and recycling in the kitchen, including kitchen organics.

Low-tech composting on an island
Article Abstract:
The Sri Lanka town of Pilyandala began a series of composting trials using urban organic waste as the main feedstock in early 1995, with the aim of improving the management of residuals from fruit and vegetable markets. The project was developed by the National Forum of People's Organization (NFPO), which has grown into a small enterprise. Identifying suitable compost site remains a problem and there have been discussions with local authorities to create new partnerships and establish a new compost site.
