Improving playing fields with compost

Article Abstract:

Compost is gaining popularity as an alternative for repairing and as a topdressing for athletic fields. Designers and landscape architects use compost as a topsoil component to replace or amend the soil in playing fields or as a topdressing, due to its organic matter content. Successful application of compost in fields include Holbrook County Club's golf course, Buffalo Bills' Orchard Park practice field, Berman Soccer Field and Central Park's Great Lawn. Aside from its organic content, compost costs less than other topdressings such as peat moss.

Major markets expand for compost

Article Abstract:

About 140,000 metric tons of domestic vegetation are landfilled in South Australia. The state and the Australian federal government aim to achieve a 50% reduction in landfilling by 2000. Australia's primary waste management and recycling arm, Recycle 2000, and scientists from the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research organization are conducting a series of research initiatives that would test the use of compost in agricultural production especially in the areas of vintage wine growing and horticultural products.
