Landfills, haulers and composted sludge

Article Abstract:

Owner and operator C.K. Brown of Rose Disposal Services Inc in Lynnville, IN, has plans of reclaiming the stripmined lands they are operating on through composting. Twelve years ago Brown had the idea of economically operating a landfill business since their haulers were coming back empty after hauling coal to their customers. After 12 years of operating the landfill business Brown again had a brilliant idea of restoring ecological balance to the ravaged and chemically-polluted mine sites by composting the hauled municipal sludge.

Landscapers expand into composting

Article Abstract:

Larry Holkenborg's company in Ohio which specializes in the selection and installation of landscaping plants and lawn maintenance, and has been composting in outdoor windrows for 2 decades, and Hollandia Gardens Inc., which started Compost Soil Technologies Inc (CST), are examples of the growing inclination of landscapers to make composting an integral part of their business. CST was started because researchers found that composting helped fertilizers prevent nutrients from leaking away fast.

How does society learn about sludge safety?

An article in the Farm Journal magazine published in April, 1992 featured sludge as detrimental to farm land and has caused farmers to temporarily discontinue the use of sludge. Scientists have rebutted the article but thefarmers' attitude to sludge use has been significantly affected. It was postulated that this problem can be dealt with by educating the farmers using some effective suggestions.
