Innovative biofilter controls odors

Article Abstract:

Local residents complained about odors coming from a Water Control Facility in Somerset, Massachusetts, after it began a biosolids composting project in 1990. Tests were conducted to determine what was causing the smell and reduced sulphur compounds and terpenes were found to be present in high quantities. A batch-type portable mixer and larger pile aeration blowers were recommended. Biofilters and chemical mist scrubbers were also deemed to be the best way of removing odors. The biofilters were put into the compost room and were successful in controlling the odors.

Role of composting in solving our solid waste problem

Article Abstract:

Composting organic wastes can be an effective method of reducing refuse bound for sanitary landfills and incinerators. However, the states and the federal government need to work hand in hand to effectively implement composting schemes. First, the state and the federal government need to consider composting in any waste management project. There must also be a precise aim in implementing composting projects. Standards and markets for the end product should also be taken into account. Finally, financial aid to composting programs must be provided.
