Keeping it simple ... and manageable

Article Abstract:

The successful operation of a composting facility depends on several factors. First, compost operators should ensure ample air exchange in the composting pile. This can be done by constructing the pile in such a way that a chimney effect takes place within the pile. This process allows air to be drawn to the bottom and then vented to the top, thereby assuring enough oxygen for microbial activity. Second, the selection of the proper particle sizes for the pile is also necessary. Lastly, compost operators should be willing to experiment and change, as the composting process is basically site specific.

Using compost to grow trees in Ghana

Article Abstract:

Thomas Kweku Aubyn of Ghana cites the community composting and tree planting programs he witnessed when he visited Lindsborg, KS, as the inspiration for composting activities in Ghana. Kansas's programs have won international recognition for yard debris recycling. Upon his arrival in Ghana, Aubyn explained the potential for the abundant manure, sawdust and grasses in the land. Equipped with the knowledge he learned from Wes Adell, the coordinator of Lindsborg's composting program, Aubyn is set to teach his fellowmen about composting.

Vermicomposting in the Carolinas

Article Abstract:

JWH Industries Inc. of South Carolina and Vermicycle Organics Inc. of North Carolina follow two separate processing paths for vermicomposting. Each worm breeding farm of JWH has its own equipment to separate worms, castings and eggs. JWH has piloted projects with worms using various organic materials such as manures, biosolids, brewery filter cake and wood pulp. Vermicycle uses swine manure, which is flushed into open lagoons and then sprayed on field crops. Greenhouses have been constructed to hold beds that will deliver manure.
