Recyclability helps design tomorrow's cars

Article Abstract:

Automakers consider cost, lightness of weight and recyclability when choosing components for the cars they manufacture. Recyclability has become a factor in auto design because of environmental regulations and cost savings from implementing vehicle recycling programs. With this production trend, aluminum has become the preferred material of car components, replacing traditional steel and iron.

Paper tiger

Article Abstract:

The Weyerhaeuser Recycling Facility Itasca, IL, boosts its efficiency with the help of the Bulk Handling System mechanical sorter. Installed in June 1997, with the help of a $250,000 grant from the State of Illinois, the sorter has allowed Weyerhaeuser to improve turnaround time for its delivered customers and guarantee quality to mill customers. The Itasca facility was designed from the ground up as a state-of-the-art facility to handle paper. The facility, which focuses on post-consumer office paper and corrugated, now handles 20 to 30 grades of paper and aluminum.

MRF owners, builders look to maximize quality

Article Abstract:

Operators of material recovery facilities (MRFs) are torn between investing in automation and dealing with low prices for most recyclables. Another problem for MRF operators is the increasing preference by collectors for commingled collection to keep collection costs down. Whether the MRF operator chooses to invest in automation or not, one fact that remains constant is that consumers will continue to demand for the cleanest material possible.
