Modeling ecological constraints on tropical forest management: comment

Article Abstract:

H.J. Albers' recent model of ecological constraints on tropical forest management may be evaluated with regard to stressing the complexity of the subject and proving the functionality of her procedure. It has been argued that one cannot determine whether the advantages Albers claims for forest preservation policies are indeed attributable to her laudable extension of the conventional two-period AFH construct, or to extreme modeling strategies that systematically favor preservation over development options in land use.

Technological change and the dynamics of resource scarcity measures

Article Abstract:

The effect of technological change on the time paths of resource scarcity measures such as cost, price and rent is investigated within a general competitive model of resource extraction. The possible relationship between the time paths is also studied. Results suggest that the effect of technological change depends to a large extent on whether it is extraction-based or depletion-based.

On the scarcity value of ecosystem services

Article Abstract:

The scarcity value of ecosystem services in the analyses of jointly determined ecological-economic systems is analysed. The stochastic control theoretic framework can be used to obtain a numerical value that is closely related to the scarcity value of an ecosystem service provided by lakes.
