Putting responsibility on industry

Article Abstract:

A new German packaging ordinance puts the burden of recycling entirely on industry. The industry responded by creating Duales System Deutschland (DSD), a consortium of packagers, manufacturers and distributors, to collect and sort packaging waste to be sent for recycling. The DSD licenses a Green Dot on packages that it guarantees to accept for recycling. The Greed Dot has invited criticism from environmental organizations who feel it is the symbol of a one-way non-environmental package rather than an environmental package.

Hazardous sites and landfills utilize compost

Article Abstract:

Backyard composting in Germany is becoming widely practiced. A large amount of compost is thus being produced and being used in agriculture, horticulture and landscaping. Research, however, is uncovering other beneficial uss for compost, including the improvement of biodegradation in oil contaminated soils, using compost in the cover and recultivation layer of landfills for methane generation and enhancing methane generation in the bottom layer of landfills.

Recycling packaging materials

Article Abstract:

Manufacturers in Germany and Canada are planning to develop new recycling procedures for the packaging industry. Similarity between the programs is the result of the dynamic and complex initiatives taken by these countries. The Canadian National Packaging Protocol has set up a target of 35% reduction in waste disposal for the year 1995. There was a 21% decrease in per capita packaging disposal in Canada between 1988-92.
